I contemplated writing this because the words had to be right. They had to be sincere and they had to come from my heart. About two years ago I reached out to a friend of mine because I felt the lack of POC in the boudoir community and I wanted to help make a change. It bothered me. I mean I can’t make anyone sign up to do a session with me as I hope to see more representation from POC, LBGTQ+, and males. The clients are there, it’s just so underrepresented and they fear falling into the wrong hands. Who can blame them? They dont see people often who look like them. So it is more than reasonable to understand it would be hard to hire a photographer to capture these vulnerable sessions that they just are not sure they can trust. I could write separate blog posts about each of the topics, but I am writing on POC first because I had a client this week who wrote a review for me on google and something she wrote really stood out to me, and then it made my heart hurt for her. For her and for countless others who feel exactly like she does. My friend told me that I absolutely should market to POC and do it naturally. He told me that he understood why I asked how to approach the subject but people like me for me and he appreciated that I noticed the lack of representation. But he gave me guidance on how to help make a change (thank you, Russell!) That conversation stayed with me. Then it all came flooding back to me when I read something last night.
Skye wrote “My nerves melted as soon as a walked in the door. Tiffany and Morgan are so very warm and friendly and knocked my wall down immediately. I'll be honest, as a dark skinned black woman, I've been screwed by photographers (and by society as a whole, thinking that I'm not beautiful and am less than) and Tiffany and Morgan were literally the best hype women and brought out this confident woman that I didn't know existed inside of me.”
Can you imagine feeling like that as a human being? No less in 2024? Sadly we still have a long way to go. So Skye, thank you for showing me what I worried about was correct and that it is time for a major change. I want to show anyone and everyone they are beautiful. It is what I am here for. I love my job but the biggest blessing is being part of a process when a human sees themselves for the first time in the best way possible. Everyone deserves to feel that way.
Boudoir photography has long been associated with capturing intimate and empowering moments, but as our society continues to evolve, so does the representation within this art form. In this blog post, we explore the beautiful intersection of People of Color (POC) and boudoir photography, highlighting the importance of diversity and inclusivity in celebrating individual beauty.1. Embracing Cultural Diversity:Boudoir photography is about celebrating the unique beauty and sensuality of each individual. By incorporating diverse cultural elements, photographers can create a rich tapestry of images that resonate with people from various backgrounds. From traditional attire to symbolic props, cultural diversity enhances the narrative of boudoir photography, making it a truly inclusive art form.2. Empowering Through Representation:Representation matters, and this holds true in boudoir photography as well. POC individuals have historically been underrepresented in mainstream media, leading to a lack of visibility and relatability. Boudoir photography provides a platform to challenge these norms, fostering a sense of empowerment and self-love among individuals who may not have seen themselves represented in this context before.3. Challenging Beauty Standards:Boudoir photography has the power to challenge conventional beauty standards by showcasing the diversity of body shapes, sizes, and features within the POC community. Breaking away from narrow ideals, these images inspire a broader acceptance of what is considered beautiful, fostering a more inclusive understanding of attractiveness.4. Storytelling Through Imagery:Boudoir photography is not just about aesthetics; it's a form of storytelling. By integrating the stories, experiences, and backgrounds of POC individuals, photographers can create a narrative that resonates on a deeper level. This storytelling aspect adds a layer of authenticity to the images, making them more meaningful and relatable.5. Collaborative Creativity:Photographers and subjects can collaborate to infuse cultural nuances and personal experiences into boudoir shoots. This collaborative approach not only enhances the creative process but also ensures that the final images authentically represent the individual's identity and cultural background. The intersection of POC and boudoir photography is a celebration of diversity, empowerment, and inclusivity. By embracing different cultural perspectives, challenging beauty standards, and telling unique stories, this evolving art form becomes a powerful tool for fostering self-love and confidence. As the world of boudoir photography continues to expand, it is crucial to champion representation and provide a space where every individual feels seen, valued, and celebrated.
